Bay Shore NY Yellow Pages

Bay Shore is a hamlet and census-designated Place on the South Shore of Long Island, located in the Town of Islip in western Suffolk County. Bay Shore overlooks the Great South Bay, and the land was purchased from native americans by John Mowbray over 300 years ago. Bay Shore has had several names over that period of time. Early europeans borrowed the Secatogue words “Penataquit” and “Awixa,” and toward the beginning of the 19th century to town was called “Sodom.” In 1842 the town was renamed Mechanicsville, and then renamed again to Penataquit in 1849. The town was officially called Bay Shore in 1868.
